How a round is played

xx 999 Blackjack table with cards being dealt

The main goal in blackjack is simple — get your hand total as close to 21 as possible without going over, because exceeding 21 means you "bust" and lose. At the same time, your total must be higher than the dealer's. The dealer, or the house, is your opponent — not the other players.

A round begins by placing a bet. Once bets are placed, each player and the dealer receive two cards. Both of the player's cards are face up; one of the dealer's cards is face up and the other is face down.

Card values: cards 2 through 10 are worth their printed number. Jack, Queen, and King — the three face cards — are each worth 10. An Ace is worth either 1 or 11, whichever is better for the hand.

On their turn, a player can make four decisions: take another card (Hit), stay with the current hand (Stand), double the bet and take exactly one more card (Double Down), or if the first two cards are of the same rank, separate them into two hands (Split). These decisions are what take blackjack beyond pure luck and make room for strategy.

After your turn, the dealer reveals their face-down card. The dealer generally Hits up to 16 and Stands on 17 or higher. If the dealer busts, all remaining players win. Otherwise, the results are decided by comparing totals.

Different types of bets and payouts

Alongside the main bet in blackjack, there are also some side bet options. Each has its own payout and mechanics — explained plainly below.

Main Bet

Placed at the start of every round. If you beat the dealer, you win an amount equal to your bet.

1:1
Main Bet All Tables

Natural Blackjack

This occurs when your first two cards are an Ace and a 10-value card. At most tables this payout is higher than a regular win.

3:2

Insurance

When the dealer's face-up card is an Ace, you can place an Insurance bet of up to half your main bet. If the dealer has blackjack, the Insurance bet wins.

2:1
Side Bet Optional

Double Down

On certain hands you can double your main bet and receive exactly one more card. Used at the right moment, this can be profitable.

Bet × 2
Strategic One Card

Split

If you have two cards of the same rank, you can split them into two separate hands. Each hand requires a bet equal to the original main bet.

2 Hands
Pair Two Chances

Side Bets

Depending on the table, side bets such as Perfect Pairs or 21+3 may be available. These are independent of the main game and are won based on card combinations.

Extra Bet Optional

How much of an advantage does the house have in blackjack

Blackjack has one of the lowest house edges among casino card games. Playing with correct basic strategy generally brings the house edge down to around 0.5%, which is notably lower than most other table games.

How low the house edge goes depends on the specific rules of the table — for example, how many decks are in play, whether the Natural Blackjack payout is 3:2 or 6:5, and whether the dealer Stands on Soft 17. All of these factors directly affect the house edge.

The Insurance bet generally gives the house an extra advantage; most strategy guides recommend avoiding it. Side bets also tend to carry a higher house edge than the main game.

Before betting at a live casino table at xx 999, it is worth checking the table rules — particularly the payout ratio and number of decks.

A practical strategy for beginners

"Basic strategy" in blackjack means making the mathematically best decision based on your hand and the dealer's face-up card. It takes some time to learn, but with a little practice it becomes second nature.

  • 1 If your hand totals 11 or less, there is no risk of busting — Hit without hesitation.
  • 2 If your total is 17 or more, Standing is generally the right call — let the dealer have a chance to bust.
  • 3 If your hand is 10 or 11 and the dealer's face-up card is weak, consider Double Down.
  • 4 Always Split a pair of Aces — you get the chance to build two strong hands.
  • 5 Do not Split a pair of 10-value cards — a total of 20 is already a very strong hand.
  • 6 If the dealer's face-up card is 4, 5, or 6, the dealer is more likely to bust — play conservatively at these times.
  • 7 It is generally better to skip the Insurance bet — over the long run it favours the house.

Keep in mind that basic strategy is designed to give the best long-term results for every decision. It does not guarantee a win in every round, but it does reduce the house edge. Those looking to build skills across multiple games can also check out the multi-bet strategy.

Live Dealer and Digital Blackjack — what is the difference

xx 999 live dealer blackjack table with a professional dealer

At xx 999, blackjack is available in two main formats. In the live dealer version, a professional dealer deals cards directly from a studio — the video stream gives you a feel of a real table. Live blackjack generally has higher table limits and a more realistic atmosphere. The digital version, on the other hand, makes it easier to practise at lower limits, since you can play at whatever pace you choose.

Common questions about blackjack

If the total value of your cards exceeds 21, you "bust." When that happens, you immediately lose the round and the house takes your bet — there is no need to see the dealer's hand. If the dealer busts, all remaining players at the table (who have not busted themselves) win that round.

A hand with an Ace is called a "Soft" hand — for example, Ace + 6 = Soft 17 (because the Ace counts as 1 to give 7, or as 11 to give 17). A 17 without an Ace is a "Hard 17." Hitting on Soft 17 carries no bust risk (the Ace simply drops in value), so some tables allow the dealer to Hit on Soft 17 — giving the house a slight extra edge. It is worth checking the table rules before you sit down.

Card counting can reduce the house edge to some extent in land-based casinos. In online blackjack, however, the deck is typically reshuffled before every round, making counting effectively useless. At live dealer tables, multiple decks combined with frequent shuffling also make it very difficult to apply. Basic strategy is the most practical approach for the average player.

Basic strategy recommends splitting a pair of 8s in every situation. A total of 16 is a weak hand — hitting it carries a high bust risk, and standing makes it easy for the dealer to beat you. Starting two new hands from two separate 8s produces a better average outcome, even when the dealer is showing a strong card.

Typically 1 to 8 decks are used. Fewer decks slightly lower the house edge. Most live tables online use 6–8 decks. With fewer decks, basic strategy also performs a little better. The number of decks is listed in the table information, so you can compare and choose accordingly.

When your hand total equals the dealer's total, it is called a "Push" or tie. In this case your bet is returned to you — you neither win nor lose. The round ends with no gain or loss.
